How to use this site

The Tourism New Zealand website is the official tourism portal for New Zealand. It features information that is relevant to travellers who are thinking about visiting New Zealand. As well as general sections about things to see and do, the site includes an extensive database of accommodation, activity and transport suppliers. Useful interactive tools, such as Travel Planner and Driving Routes, make it easy to plan a detailed itinerary. A site-wide search tool allows you to quickly find information about specific places, activities or operators. Specialised content exists to help the conference sector, travel trade, tourism industry and media.
What’s in the main sections?

Travel Planner

This interactive tool allows you to build your own collection of towns and cities, activities, accommodation, scenic highlights, transport providers and driving routes. At any stage you can print your collection and use it as a basis for an itinerary. You can also send your Travel Planner collection to a travel companion, save your collection, or to the travel agent who’s making your bookings. You need to sign up to use Travel Planner, however there is no charge for the service. Once registered, you can access your Travel Planner collection from any computer.

To understand what each part of the country has to offer, browse the 24 regions. Every region is presented in detail - a general introduction, key features, scenic highlights and recommended things to do. You can also look through the various accommodation and transport options.

Click the National Parks link and you’ll find a comprehensive guide to New Zealand’s 14 national parks. Discover what makes each park special, then investigate the outdoor adventures you could have.

The interactive New Zealand Map is a way to explore the country, learning as you go. It shows cities, towns, main roads, national parks, rivers, lakes and information centres. You can even see the current weather situation. The travel times calculator is a helpful tool.

In the Travel Journals section you’ll find magazine-style articles that help you to imagine some of New Zealand’s most enjoyable experiences. Links will take you from here to other related areas within the site.

Sights and Activities

Scenic highpoints and experiences have been organised so that you can follow your interests.

When you click on Scenic Highlights, you can explore eight categories of scenery - coastal highlights, natural phenomena, history and culture, islands, lakes, parks and reserves, scenic views and walks.

Click on Activities and you’ll find a comprehensive directory of experiences - from bungy jumps and jet boat rides to museums, dolphin encounters and garden tours. Activities are grouped according to whether they are land, air or water based, cultural or related to wildlife.

All listings under Scenic Highlights and Activities can be added to your Travel Planner.

Go to the Events Calendar and you’ll find festivals, concerts, shows and other celebrations. You can search by month or type of event. To view the complete list of events, select all regions and leave the keyword search blank. The information is based on facts supplied by event organisers. Tourism New Zealand can accept no responsibility for any errors, omissions or alterations made subsequently by the organisers.

Accommodation

Here you can learn about the various types of accommodation available in New Zealand, then sort through the listings to find what you’re looking for. Accommodation is organised into seven categories - Backpackers, Exclusive, Guest & Hosted, Holiday Homes, Holiday Parks, Hotels, and Self Contained & Serviced. Listed accommodation operators can be added to your Travel Planner. In this section you can also find out about Qualmark, a quality assurance system that helps to ensure your satisfaction.

Getting to and around New Zealand

All your questions related to the process of getting to New Zealand are answered in this section. Basic facts about passports and visas are customised according to your home country, you can read profiles of our main international airports, and there are listings of travel agents and tour operators who specialise in travel to New Zealand. You can even check out the latest travel deals. A currency converter lets you see the current rate of exchange for New Zealand dollars.

Getting around New Zealand is half the fun of being here. This section lets you consider every type of transport - from motor homes and rental cars to trains, bikes and planes. Each category has a listing of operators, so you can make contact with suppliers or add them to your Travel Planner. The Driving in New Zealand page has information about licenses, road rules and safety considerations. The Travel Times and Distances calculator is a useful planning tool.

Driving Routes and Themed Highways are sections aimed at travellers who like the independence of a self-drive holiday. Driving Routes helps you to identify a road trip that will fit into your itinerary - anything from a short excursion to a grand tour of three weeks or more. Themed Highways covers a selection of eight signposted touring routes that have become famous for their unique scenery.

Operators

This website contains an extensive database of New Zealand tourism industry operators. Each operator registered with the site has a unique web page detailing the attractions and experiences on offer. You can access the tourist operator pages through the Sights & Activities, Accommodation and Transport sections or by using the search tools.

Once you have decided what you want to do and where you want to travel, you can make direct contact with the individual tourism operators concerned. All contact details are provided, including email addresses, and in some cases links to their own websites.
