- Lakeside resort towns: Queenstown and Wanaka are renowned for their stunning settings and sophisticated tourism infrastructure.
- Fiordland National Park: New Zealand’s largest park and recognised as a World Heritage area.
- Winter playground: six ski resorts and other mountain/snow related activities
- Walking/tramping: three of New Zealand’s ‘Great Walks’ begin or end here.
- Adventure: every conceivable outdoor adventure is possible.
- Relaxation and indulgence: the region has its own wine growing area along with quality dining experiences and top quality accommodation.
Quick overview
- Three areas make up Southern Lakes district - Fiordland region and the resort towns of Wanaka and Queenstown
- The main centre in Fiordland is Te Anau.
- It is approximately a seven hour drive from Christchurch to Queenstown.

Suggested Task
The compulsory task is designed to test your learning and reinforce your skills.
As you work through the module use the information you gather to build an itinerary using the following criteria.
Mode of transport: Rental car
Time available - land: Seven days
Starting point: Christchurch
Ending point: Queenstown
Continuing onto: They are planning to either travel to the West Coast or continue from Te Anau on the Southern Scenic
Client Profile: A couple in their 30’s who enjoy high adrenaline activities and being in the outdoors. They are on their honeymoon so they also want to spend some quiet time relaxing in a beautiful location. They are flying into New Zealand via Christchurch and are planning a week based in the Southern Lakes region. From here they have another 10 days to visit other parts of the South Island. Either plan a winter itinerary or summer itinerary for them.
Take into consideration, travel times between centres and include suggested activities and attractions that fit your clients’ profiles.
